How Do You Digest Your Life?

View report

Dear friends,

The spiritual meaning of how you digest your life refers to how you process, integrate, and make sense of your experiences, emotions, and challenges. Just as your body digests food to extract nutrients for growth and energy, your mind and spirit ” digest” life events to gain wisdom, understanding, and personal growth.

My friend Jewel’s mom recently passed away at 101. I asked Jewel what her Mom’s keys to longevity were. She said, “Mom was always positive even through difficult challenges she faced- she had a strong faith and always gave her problems to G-d”. She wasn’t that careful about her diet. So I said, her diet was of surrender, and strong faith. I was moved.

  1. How well do you absorb lessons from life’s experiences? Do you complain and play victim or do you reflect on challenges to grow? Or do you avoid processing difficult emotions? Are you silently grieving like the matchmaker in Fiddler On the Roof said as they were leaving Anatefca?

Spiritually, ” healthy digestion” means integrating both joyful and painful experiences into your sense of self.

  1. Letting Go of What Doesn’t Serve you- just as the body eliminates waste, spiritual digestion means examining your negative beliefs, grudges and fears. This process allows for emotional clarity and energy renewal.
  2. What do you consume in your life? Negative news? Social media?Spiritual nourishment is becoming mindful of what you take in to feed your well being. When you walk outside are you seeing the beauty around you, the shapes of the trees, the sky, the birds?
  3. Trusting the process. Sometimes spiritual growth takes time and patience and rest for integration. It’s saying no to scrolling endlessly, seeing what others are doing and feeding negative thoughts and feelings.Trust the unfloding of your life from the ” soul” perspective. What am I here to learn and develop in this lifetime?
  4. Balance and harmony. In many spiritual traditions digestion relates to the solar plexus chakra, the center of personal power, self esteem and decision- making. A balanced ” spiritual digestion’ means you are confident, resilient and aligned with your true path.

Some food for thought:
Do you give yourself space to process emotions or do you “swallow” them quickly?
Are there experiences you need to digest more fully to gain insight and closure?
How do you let go of what no longer serves you?
Are you nourishing your spirit with positive influences and realtionships?

Some practices to support spiritual digestion:
Journaling
Meditation
Breathwork
Spiritual Counseling
Creative Expression

To digest life means to accept, process, and integrate all that comes your way with awareness and compassion- letting go of what weighs you down, finding meaning in every experience and transforming challenges into wisdom. This is a purposeful life, an abundant life- one that nourishes your soul.

with fierce love,
Gedalia
