Ayurvedic Tips and Reminders

Carrot Cake Smoothie recipe

Dear friends,

Are you tired of making the same smoothies? Are you looking for some new ideas to get a protein packed and nutrient dense drink for breakfast when you are on the run? Has the change of season changed your appetite?  I hear clients share they have a sweet tooth… yes, because it’s vata season and sweet grounds vata; the change of leaves, the wind, the cool light air is all “vata” and sweet is stabilizing  to the body and mind. Sweet nourishes the tissues and calms the nerves;so sweet cravings are not a bad thing.  Instead of going for a soda or bar try one of the recipes below .

On a recent trip to the Siddha Yoga Meditation site in Oakland these smoothies were served in the afternoon a few hours before a light soup for dinner was made. They are perfect for this time of year with the season transitioning. To make it Ayurvedic, avoid using ” cold” ingredients- let them sit at room temp first and you may substitute “cooked” fruit as needed if your digestion is feeling off.

Avocado/ Ginger Lime Shake:

1 avocado pitted, one apple( raw or cooked), fresh ginger chunk peeled, juice of lime, 1 cup almond milk or coconut milk, protein powder – one packet ( whey).. Blend til smooth!

I love this thick and creamy smoothie. It’s packed with great nutrients too. ( For kapha types use 1/2 the avocado and a fresh apple).

Carrot Cake Smoothie:

Yes, carrot cake in a drink!

6 spinach leaves, one carrot, one tbsp lemon juice, 1/2 cup pineapple chunks, one tbsp coc flakes or fresh, two tbsp walnuts, 1/2 inch fresh ginger, protein powder, 7-10 drops stevia, one tsp cinnamon, one cup almond milk ( unsweetened vanilla)- I like the Blue Diamond brand, and  you may add a pinch of cardomom to top it off.

Blend and feel your skin scintillating…

Remember to pull out your crockpot and cook things like butternut squash overnight, root vegetables like parsnips and turnips.. these too are sweet and make  the house smell like a mountain getaway b and b in the morning. I’ve been making applesauce ( using it in oatmeal).. squash and sweet potatoes as snacks.. They are super sweet and satisfy that natural sweet  craving which balances vata this season.

Follow nature’s gifts and you can never be confused about eating..
