Ayurvedic Tips and Reminders- Cool the Heat with Ayurveda

I’ve been talking all year about eating warm cooked foods to strengthen digestion. If you have followed this advice and built strong digestion , now , because of the heat outside in nature it is ok to have a cold drink. For those of you who like a cooling iced tea; now is the time. Spearmint, peppermint, hibiscus, passion tea, raspberry ,are some great choices. Adding fresh mint leaves to my water is a favorite of mine or making cucumber water using fresh cucumbers and fresh mint or cilantro is cooling and soothing in the heat. Top it with a squeeze of lime or fresh ginger and your taste buds will dance.( This does not mean drink 4-5 iced drinks a day …as this will drown your digestive power which is the root cause of dis-ease in Ayurveda. )

Another exception in Ayurveda this time of year is taking a nap in the afternoon. Tying that colorful hammock  to two beautiful  trees in the shade  is a wonderful way to enjoy the dreaminess of summer and reminisce of old friends and camp experiences; let alone read  a great book.

And for all the watermelon lovers out there this fruit offered from nature this time of year with it’s juicy watery qualities will compliment the dryness of the heat both inside and out. Indulge and enjoy this summer!!

Bathing in the rays of the moon outside at night will cool your emotions and balance your mind. This ancient practice of sitting under the moonlight was very important for women especially as it helped balance hormones. We are very used to sitting in the sun.. but this will actually aggravate the ‘Pitta’ or heat in the body and can cause rashes, sunburn, and even diarrhea.

Lastly, try to avoid spicy foods! I know that’s a hard one an I empathize with you if your someone that loves spicy foods but they will aggravate the irritability of extra heat in the summer both physically and emotionally.
