Ayurvedic Tips and Reminders – Go Alkaline!

Dear friends,

The bottom line when it comes to food is that the American diet is mainly acidic. In an acid environment, the body begins to deplete its alkaline resources and becomes more susceptible to disease, and a compromised immune system. Acid forming foods create the perfect storm for a host of other diseases. Packaged, processed, wrapped, alcohol, coffee, breads, pasta are some examples of acid forming foods. Even breads labeled “whole wheat” are acidic.

What can we do to move toward an alkaline eco inner environment so that yeast, unwanted bacteria and unbeknown viruses cannot infiltrate?

Here are five simple tips from the Ayurvedic holistic health approach:

  1. Consume dark leafy greens slightly cooked-  at least one to two servings daily. Choose appropriately according to the season and your dosha.
  2. Cook with ghee. Ghee is clarified butter. It is good for lactose intolerant people and is alkalizing. Ghee builds the immune system, strengthens the body and is anti aging according to Ayurvedic medicine.
  3.  Include these alkalizing fruits : avocados, pears, peaches, cherries, apples, all types of melon, dates, papayas, figs and red grapes. Some dairy products are alkaline, such as buttermilk, raw milk, plain yogurt and acidophilus milk. Amaranth and quinoa are alkalizing grains, and almonds, chestnuts and fresh coconut are alkalizing nuts. Other alkaline foods include raw honey, kelp,  green tea and egg yolks. Lentils, mung beans and vegetables are also alkalizing; the rest acid.
  4. Follow the 80/20 rule. 80 percent of your plate alkaline and 20% acid.
  5. Take regular shots of wheatgrass, or include spirulina or chlorella into your daily routine.

Go Alkaline! Remember, knowing and doing are different.
