Ayurvedic Tips and Reminders- Why Should I Use High Quality Essential Oils?

Dear friends,

Welcome to my weekly blog.

The use of essential oils dates back to Egyptian times, 3500B.C. That’s a long time ago! Egyptians were the very first culture to use oils both for perfumery, cleanliness and preservation. There is plenty of evidence showing that the use of essential oils from the Egytptians became the basis of what is known today as aromatherapy.

How to use?

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways such as inhalation and direct application on the body. A cool mist diffuser is recommended when diffusing oils as heat destroys the medicinal properties of oils. Mixing essential oils with a “carrier” oil is recommended for maximum absorption ( outside of lavender). Some carrier oils are sesame, coconut, jojoba, and sweet almond oil.

Why Should I use High-Quality Essential Oils?

  1. Because the skin is the largest organ of the body it literally eats( absorbs) what is put on it. Would you put a low-grade gasoline in your car and expect it to run smoothly?
  2. Because high quality essential oils are not diluted with fillers and other alcohols or fragrances. In other words, they have no preservatives.
  3. Because high quality essential oils contain chemical constituents that can kill viruses and bacteria when used properly.

Ayurveda, the world’s oldest recorded healing system has been a proven system for both prevention and healing.Ayurveda recognizes the importance of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual  balance using the senses as a means of healing. The sense of smell is the most powerful according to Ayurveda as it affects the “limbic” part of the brain governing hormones and emotions. What better gem can a woman use than essential oils?

I recommend using oils such as peppermint and spearmint during the hot season of summer as they are cooling and refreshing. Simply apply one to two drops with a carrier oil to the feet or back of the neck for a refreshing pick me up. Keep away from eyes, pets, and children under 6 years of age unless guided by a professional.

bottles marmaWhen my children were young I used peppermint oil to reduce a high fever and diffused it in the home when they did their homework. As young adults today ( boys) they are still using eo’s because they purify the environment of odors and they work well to alleviate viruses.

Remember, all essential oils are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-inflammatory. You can not go wrong with essential oils, just use high quality oils such as Young Living , Nature’s Gifts or Mountain Rose.
