Qualities of Nature – The ” Gunas”

View report

Dear friends,

The qualities of nature that influence human behavior and characteristics are called “gunas” in Ayurveda.
They are named sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic.
Here’s how they influence human behavior:

1. Saatvic- meaning pure, harmonious and balanced.
Characteristics associated with qualities like wisdom, calmness, purity, and serenity.
People who exhibit saatva are often self-controlled, virtuous, and spiritually inclined.

Diet- foods that are fresh, natural, and light such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, ghee and some dairy products.

2. Rajasic- means active, dynamic, passionate
These are characteristics linked to action, ambition, and restlessness. They are motivated by desires and emotions, which can both lead to positive achievements and stress.

Diet- spicy, salty, bitter, and sour foods, coffee, tea, and certain meats. These foods are thought to stimulate the mind and can lead to agitation and imbalance.
For example: At most meditation retreats you will not see food cooked with onion and garlic as they stimulate the mind.

3. Tamasic- inert, lethargic, dark
Characteristics associated with qualities like laziness, ignorance, and heaviness. Tamasic people may exhibit traits such as depression, dullness, and lack of motivation.
Diet- foods such as stale, leftovers, processed, overcooked, fast food and alcohol are some examples that promote inertia and dullness..

Understanding these qualities can help in making lifestyle choices that promote balance and well-being according to one’s personal needs and spiritual goals.

with fierce love,
