Ayurvedic Tips and Reminders/ Natural Ways to Prevent Indigestion

Dear friends,

Welcome to my weekly blog!

Indigestion is a ten billion dollar industry in this country. Indigestion and heartburn plague one-third of Americans in the United States.

What is it? Heartburn is a painful burning in the esophagus while acid indigestion is excessive hydrochloric acid in the stomach that creates burning in the stomach, bloating, belching and even nausea.

Everyone is asking  ” what should I eat”, “is this good or not good?” but the real question I believe is ” how am I eating , and when am I eating them?

Here are five simple effective tips from Ayurveda to prevent these symptoms:

  1. The main cause of indigestion from an Ayurvedic perspective is improper food combining. Here are some common examples that you may eat on a regular basis that cause indigestion and a sour feeling in the stomach which then results in poor absorption of minerals and fatigue! Milk with fruit, yogurt with fruit. Fruit should be eaten along ( also a homeopathic philosophy). The body uses different enzymes to digest different food groups and it goes into overload when they are grouped together. Some other examples are fish with milk or yogurt, beans and cheese, eggs with cheese and potatoes. proteins are best with vegetables, Carbohydrates like pasta, grains are best with vegetables and eggs are best with veggies. Different types of protein also create heavy digestion such as meat and seafood; surf and turf. By eating simply and as close to the original way nature made that food you are harmonizing your body with natural law For a complete list from Vasant lad please read  .http://www.ayurveda.com/pdf/food_combining.pdf
  2. Aloe Vera juice is not only excellent for digestion but it supports the immune system, lowers cholesterol and blood sugar, and boosts vitamin and mineral intake.
  3.  Chew food slowly until it is completely mush supports better digestion. That takes mindfulness. we often woof down our food in preparation for the next thing.
  4. Eating foods in harmony with the season. Some examples now are pumpkin, squashes, root vegetables such as parsnips, rutabaga, carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips. Some incorrect foods to eat  in Atlanta now would be watermelon  and any type of melon. Fennel seeds after a meal offer a delightful support to your stomach. I like cooking with fennel bulb.
  5. Eat according to your hunger until your stomach is about 2/3rds full.  How many times do we say.. ” I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that.. or “I was already full and I had another portion”.Avoid cold and iced drinks as well as drinking excess water with meals. Sipping on warm water is always good and making fresh ginger tea is one of my favorites.Ginger, Tribe, Spice, Raw, Food, Healthy
