Four Ways to Soothe Eye Strain
Dear friends,
Due to the high use of cell phones, computers, i pads and other electronic devices, which translates to excessive eye engagement, many of us commonly face eye strain & eye fatigue.
Summer is the ideal time to give extra attention to your physical body’s eyes as the hot heat from the sun in July and August can irritate the eyes with it’s strong ultraviolet rays as well as cause extra dryness.
In Ayurveda, the eyes are connected to “pitta” dosha as they are ruled by the sun.Pitta is associated with fire, and people in whom pitta is typically dominant tend to be motivated and focused.
No matter what your prevalent dosha is you can refresh your eyes and soothe eye strain by:
1.Splashing them gently with cool water.
2. Using over the counter eye drops such as Theratears or Blink if you wear contacts .Both of these can easily be carried in your handbag or kept near your computer to refresh your eyes. There are even drops called Re-fresh!
3. Your nutrition can highly affect the health of your eyes so remember to chow down on extra antioxidants during the summer months.Scientists at the Laboratory for Nutrition and Vision Research of the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University collected and reviewed dozens of clinical studies. Their findings target nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and lutein as the best antioxidants for eye health.
To infuse your diet with these nutrients, eat plenty of spinach, broccoli, corn, strawberries, and nuts. The researchers suggest at least 250 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, 90 mg of vitamin E, and 3 mg of lutein daily. ( pretty easy with summer fruits).
4. Rubbing your palms together really fast then placing them over your eyes can benefit eye fatigue especially if your overloaded from screen time. The heat of your hands will feel soothing and calming. This practice can also be shared with kids who often don’t take frequent enough computer breaks.
Just like you wear sunscreen for your body, keeping your eyes protected from UV rays is an important step in preventing cataracts and macular degeneration.
And of course having fun with some hats during the summer months is key to shielding the sun from your eyes. The Gap, J.Crew and Target are some resources to find shady brimmed hats!
