Three Things for Balancing Vata Season

Dear friends,

First, I’d like to share the news about a new Ayurvedic series published in the Sept. issue of Natural Awakenings in Atlanta. It is the first of three-part series that I wrote. I am honored to be the guest columnist.
Please share with your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors as a holistic lifestyle that is harmony with nature is pretty aligned with where we are right now on the planet. Don’t you think? Ayurveda is not just about Vata, Pitta, Kapha. It gives us access to connect with ourselves more deeply and authentically whether it’s through meditation, sound, breathwork, yoga, diet, herbs, self-care, and awareness; tools we need to navigate for our own well being and the wellbeing of our children and families.

Also, want to share a new service I am offering. It’s called the ” Intuitive Grief Session”. There is a beautiful image on my Instagram page Gedalia Healing Arts. This session is available in person or long distance. As I’ve navigated grief in my own life I’ve learned how this energy can be transformed and integrated as compassion, creativity, self-acceptance, and greater vitality.
I’m feeling inclined to work with other women and young adults and help them energetically feel unburdened, lighter and feel their strength within.
After fifteen years of working with women, I have found that ” grief” is often what is blocking a woman’s energy. Hence it affects one’s health in various ways. We may think we got over a loss but where does the stress or trauma go? In the body. It shows up as fatigue, depression, digestive issues, headaches, insomnia, pain, and a nagging feeling that something is wrong with us.

If you know of someone who could use this session I would appreciate the referrals.

This session will include time to listen, energy healing ( Marma), and intuitive discoveries. Details on the services page of my website. Gedaliahealingarts

The change of season is upon us. Ayurveda defines each season with certain qualities that express in nature. Fall manifests dry cooler air, perhaps wind and the falling of the leaves. Although we are not quite there yet in Atlanta, we can still feel the shift in the earth as it moves toward the Fall season.
To live in harmony with nature both within and without is the basis of an Ayurvedic, holistic lifestyle.

These are three things you can do to stay balanced during this season:

1. Opposite qualities heal. So staying warm ( opposite of cool) helps us find balance. Warm water, as opposed to cold water or tea, is a helpful change to our bodies while it prepares for winter. Eating warm foods, such as roasted root vegetables, soups, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, cooked apples are just a few. I started drinking a cup of miso soup in the afternoon around 3 pm to get hydrated and give me a good energy lift instead of a caffeinated drink. It’s working.

2. Stay oiled. Oiling the body has many health benefits. The obvious is that it’s good for the skin ( anti-aging) but it has many other health benefits. In this case, grounding! Again, the opposite of the drying of the leaves. Oiling the body also protects the immune system something we should begin to pay attention to before winter. Ayurveda calls this practice abhyanga.  You can use sesame oil, jojoba or sweet almond oil- mix with your favorite essential oils if you like. ( coconut oil is cooling to save it for the summer). This practice can be done before the shower or less vigorously before bedtime. Once you begin this practice you won’t want to stop!

3. Follow a daily routine ( ritual). It doesn’t have to be rigid. You can make it your own. Moving from summer where routine is abandoned to travel, fun activities and the like, Fall is a time to get back to basics.
Routine helps to establish balance in one’s constitution. It also regularizes a person’s biological clock, aids digestion, absorption and assimilation, and generates self-esteem, discipline, peace, happiness, and longevity.
Just like the sun and moon have cycles so too our bodies when treated with regularity gains energy and vitality.
Ideally, waking up early  (6 am) to meditate, journal, perform abhyanga, do some exercise and eat breakfast can comprise a morning routine. Eating and sleeping at the same times are also included in this ritual.

My favorite oils to add to self-massage are cypress ( for circulation) or Ylang Ylang and Geranium,  and Holy Basil ( not all-together). What are yours?
